Многозначное существительное язык соответствует английским language и tongue. Язык ('средство общения') эквивалентно английскому language: изучать иностранные языки – to study foreign languages, древние языки – classic languages, живые языки – living languages. Language может также означать 'язык как разновидность речи': литературный язык – literary language, разговорный язык – conversational language. Tongue в значении 'средство общения' встречается только в определенных сочетаниях: родной язык – mother tongue, способность к изучению иностранных языков – the gift of tongues. Основное значение tongue – 'язык как орган речи': прикусить язык – to bite one's tongue, на кончике языка (в буквальном и метафорическом значении) – on the tip of one's tongue.
